New venue - this screening will now take place at the Street School Community Center.

A screening of two short films Protection Not Protest: The People of Standing Rock and The Community of the River Wachirpas. In 2016 people of the Standing Rock Reservation of the Lakota Nation had to defend their watershed and sacred burial sites from an invading oil company. Protection Not Protest is a short and impactful film by Academy Award winner Jonathan Demme listens to the voices of the People of Standing Rock urging us to defend our water. The Community of the River Wachirpas brings viewers into the heart of the Amazon, where oil contamination is risking the lives and culture of an Achuar community living on the Wachirpas River. We’ll conclude with a conversation facilitated by filmmaker Brooklyn Demme on film, activism, mentorship, and building community at home and abroad.
