In the 1950s the Bay Area art scene rebelled against the dominant abstract-expressionist painting style centered in New York. Three painters/ teachers at the California School of Fine Arts dared to include subject matter in their paintings, and an art movement was started. In the 1960s, a second generation of CA artists would go further and develop Funk art, a whimsical style that rejected the seriousness of the East coast art scene.
