Thanks to our Flight Path Grant through HHMI Tangled Bank studios, we will show the short film "Wild Hope: Building for Birds," followed by a live demonstration of how you can help birds stay safe. Bird-window collisions, or "strikes," are the leading cause of human-caused bird mortality. Bird strikes happen because birds cannot distinguish reflections in the glass from real habitat, like trees and sky. One approach that is very accessible to homeowners is Acopian Birdsavers. These paracord “curtains” can be purchased pre-made. But, they are also an easy and inexpensive DIY project. Sheean Haley, a scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, has participated in making over 65 Acopian Birdsavers for installation on Lamont buildings. Sheean will demonstrate how to make your own and offer some tips and tricks learned in the process. Come learn how to make your own homes bird-safe on a budget!
